The CUSTOS Box has been designed using standard components manufactured by large, well established electronics businesses. In this way the product will continue to benefit from development upgrades intrinsic to the component hardware.

The core component is the GE863-GPS module by Telit Communications SpA (Italy) which is a highly integrated telecommunications system developed specifically for asset tracking applications. The GE863 combines:
- Global Positioning System (GPS)
- General Packet Radio Systems (GPRS) for telecommunications
- General-purpose input and output functions
Also resident within the module is a high level scripting or programming language allowing user specific functionality to be securely programmed into the device. This latter function provides a high level of product customisation and differentiation whilst avoiding the high costs of full product development and approval. High volume manufacture of the module results in rapidly available economies of scale. Hence the GE863-GPS module solution allows a highly personalised, feature rich end product that is unique to the target application whilst having a minimal development risk and short time to market.
